Centre conference papers feature on US Web page. "It is always gratifying when papers from 'downunder' are well received at international conferences and especially so when that reception is widely disseminated" said Mr McShane, Director of the Centre for Resource Management Studies, today.
Mr McShane has recently returned from presenting a group of papers to a recent conference in San Jose California where the theme was "Recovering from Smart Growth". <http://www.americandreamcoalition.org/pad07.html>
"These conferences are organised by the _American Dream Coalition_ <http://www.americandreamcoalition.org/index.html>, under the leadership of Randal O'Toole. Mr O'Toole also hosts his personal web page _"The Antiplanner"_ <http://ti.org/antiplanner/> which promote the arguments that central planning is no more successful when applied to cities and regions than when applied to nations such as the failed Soviet Union.
"The _page currently features the three papers_ the Centre delivered to the _San Jose Conference_ . _<http://www.americandreamcoalition.org/index.html> The major paper, accompanied by a Power Point Presentation was _Alternatives to Smart Growth. However, this main resentation was supported by three other papers. The first rejects the argument that Metropolitan Urban Limits or Urban Growth Boundaries are necessary. The second argues that we should be fully aware of what planners have in mind when they promote "Sustainable Urban Form" and other aesthetic concepts, while the third argues that Climate Change is the "last gasp" of Smart Growth planning.
There is an overview of the presentations on the home page but to read all the papers you need to click on "read the rest of this entry>>" below the pictures of Halle Neustadt.
"To read about "Sustainable Urban Form" click on the word "shows" under the picture of Halle Neustadt and note that this triggers a download, not a link.
"Similarly if you click on "Last Gasp" in the second paragraph this triggers a download (not a link) of the Paper "Climate Change - the last gasp of Smart Growth".
"However, the reference to the "Australian Study" is a link which you can use directly here.
"In case you have problems linking to, or downloading, the paper on "Urban Growth Boundaries", it is attached as a pdf file below.
"We are confident you will enjoy exploring Randal O"Toole's "Antiplanner" page and we especially recommend you link to the _American Dream Coalition_ page and consider enrolling at the 2008 Conference to be held in Houston, during May of next year. The theme of the Houston conference will be Land Use without Zoning <http://americandreamcoalition.org/pad08.html>.
"Randal O'Toole will be visiting New Zealand early next year and the Centre is happy to arrange media interviews.
"We have much to learn from the US experience and the experiences of others as presented in these excellent conferences" said Mr McShane. "There is no need to repeat the mistakes of others, no matter how much we seem determined to do so."
