Auckland’s CBD is an accident of history. We built it just in time. No central business district has been built since the invention of the low cost motor car except by government diktat. And neither Brasilia nor Canberra are genuine CBDs. The forces of decentralisation are now stronger than ever, and these are further reinforced by the population implosion driving the demographics of the developed world. This means that the Auckland CBD is a tender flower which may not survive. The first rule then should be do no harm. And yet our planners appear determined to destroy the city in order to save it.
